A
former Minister of Sports and governorship candidate of the defunct
Action Congress of Nigeria, Prof. Tahoeed Adedoja, has said he does not
need to engage in extravagant spending to become the governor of Oyo
State.
He also said joining politics did not
have any negative influence on his academic calling and that he had
coped perfectly with the demands of being a politician.
Adedoja, who is one of the Peoples
Democratic Party governorship aspirants having paid the mandatory N3m
fee to the party, said he did not have to make his intention known by
organising a rally and mounting the rostrum to address supporters.
The former Commissioner for Education in
the state, who spoke on Saturday, in Ibadan, said his style of politics
was designed to favour both the elite and the masses.
He said, “I have been governorship
candidate thrice in the state and despite losing out to former governor
Adebayo Alao-Akala in 2007, I had also come so close to being the state
governor. All these I achieved despite being a professor.
“The Political terrain in Nigeria is
perceived to be expensive, unpredictable and difficult but if the elite
refuse to take part in it, what we get is what we deserve.
“I don’t have to practice politics in the
same style as others who are not as enlightened as me. I don’t have to
declare publicly in extravagant fashion because we are entering a new
era of politics in the country where people will prefer quality
candidates.”
