President of Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Dr. Kayode Obembe, on
Saturday called for community-based surveillance on the Ebola Virus
Disease in view of its ravaging potential, saying that Nigeria should
not relent in her efforts to strengthen her health systems by embarking
on “precautions and preventions” necessary to keep the scourge at bay.
Obembe disclosed this at a press briefing organised by the association
to launch its Physician’s Week with the theme: "War against Ebola’
Precautions and Prevention" in Abuja.
According to him, “Nigeria has recently been declared ‘Ebola-free’ by World Health Organisation (WHO) having responded promptly to the index and contact patients with appropriate diagnoses, surveillance and quarantine in isolation centres, for example, Lagos and Port Harcourt, and should be commended for that as the world is now learning from Nigeria’s example on how to contain Ebola.”
He called on both Federal and State governments not to relent in their efforts to ensure that Ebola is totally defeated both in Africa and the rest of the world.
Obembe said the World Medical Association (WMA) in her recent resolution in Durban South Africa (October 2014) declared Ebola a global phenomenon and that all hands must be on deck to combat the epidemic, especially those not yet affected to educate health care providers about the current case definition in addition to strengthening infection control methodologies and contact tracing in order to prevent transmission within their countries.
He added that the NMA, as a full member of World Medical Association (WMA) was committed to the resolutions of October 11 in Durban, South Africa
