A
hit-and-run driver on Saturday crushed a young girl to death at Iguosa
Housing Estate end of the Ugbowo-Lagos Expressway in Benin City.
It was gathered that accident took place
when the victim, said to be about 10 years old, was hit by a Toyota
Camry car as she tried to cross to the other side of the road. She was
killed instantly.
The driver of the vehicle, who was said to be at full speed, sped off instantly to avoid being caught.
Eyewitnesses also attributed the accident
to the presence of heavy duty vehicles parked by the side of the road,
which made it difficult for pedestrians to check properly before
crossing.
“She wanted to cross to the other side of the road but she didn’t notice that a car was coming.
“As soon as she wanted to cross, the car came at full speed and hit her and she died instantly.
“Those trailers that park along this very road are the ones causing most of the accidents.
“When somebody wants to cross the road,
there is no way he can see the other side because the trailers park here
and there,” one of the eyewitnesses said.
The body of victim was moved to a mortuary by officers of the Federal Road Safety Corps, who were at the scene of the accident.
