Social media told to simplify terms and conditions

Social media Most people use social media without every properly studying the services' rules
'
Social networking firms including Facebook and Twitter are being told to make it clearer to members how they collect and use their data.
A report by the Commons Science and Technology Select Committee says the firms' terms and conditions are far too long and complex.
The MPs say users may not be aware of how their details can be used by websites and apps.
Any reasonable person would struggle with long privacy policies, they add.
The committee says reading such documents has been likened to "engaging with Shakespeare".
And it says that the rules have been designed for use in US courtrooms and to protect organisations in the event of legal action rather than to convey information.
The Chairman of the Committee, Andrew Miller MP, pointed to an experiment where Facebook had manipulated users' emotions by varying the stories they saw in their newsfeeds.
He said this "highlighted serious concerns about the extent to which ticking the 'terms and conditions' box can be said to constitute informed consent when it comes to the varied ways data is now being used by many websites and apps".
T&Cs updates The report calls on the government to set standards which organisations can sign up to, promising to explain how they use personal data in clear, concise and simple terms.
Social media
Facebook recently unveiled updated terms and conditions policies that it claims are simpler and easier to read. It says it has "listened to people who have asked us to better explain how we get and use information".
Meanwhile Twitter has clarified its use of data in a blogpost, which explains that it collects data on the apps which users have on their phones in order to "deliver tailored content that you might be interested in".
This includes promoted tweets from advertisers. Twitter goes on to explain how users can turn off this form of data collection.
Relationship of trust The Science Committee's report also says there is a problem with apps which request information which they do not obviously need, so as to provide their service.
It says companies should have a greater responsibility to explain why they need to collect information.
Facebook Facebook was criticised for carrying out experiments on its members despite having data privacy rules
The government does not escape criticism in the report.
The Committee cites the NHS Care data programme, which was delayed after concerns about patient privacy.
This is described as an example of where the relationship of trust between data collector and customer failed to develop.
The report says the government must learn lessons and assess the impact on privacy of policies that collect, retain or process personal data

Our criticisms not attack on Jonathan, APC replies PDP

All Progressives Congress (APC) has reacted to claims by Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that the opposition’s comments on the performance of the Federal Government were a personal attack on President Goodluck Jonathan.
In a statement made available to newsmen on Tuesday and entitled: “Enough is Enough,” National Publicity Secretary of PDP, Olisa Metuh, had warned that the party would no longer tolerate scathing views about the Federal Government, saying they amounted to a personal attack on the president.
But speaking with newsmen in Abuja, National Publicity Secretary of the main opposition party, Lai Mohammed, said the APC always attacked the policies and actions of President Jonathan, and not his person.

I won’t ban Okada in Ekiti –Fayose

Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, yesterday warned commercial motorcyclists that his government would not tolerate factional crisis capable of threatening the security of the state.
He, however, pledged not to ban Okada in the state.
Fayose also charged the union to partner with government in registering all its members in view of the incessant robbery operations being perpetrated by riders in the state.
Addressing commercial cyclists in Ado Ekiti, the governor said his government would not recognize more than a group in the union.
“If they cancel Okada in every other state, that won’t happen in Ekiti. But what I want is disciplined and responsible motorcyclists’ association that can partner with government for meaningful development. Government alone cannot maintain security; I have to partner with an organization like you. But I won’t tolerate unruly behaviour.”

Having picked up only one point from their last four games, Liverpool sit 12th in the Premier League, 18 points behind leaders Chelsea.

"It's part and parcel of this wonderful life of working in football."

When lawmakers are lawbreakers!

I have always wondered why the Senate should be referred to as the upper house while the House of Representatives is seen as the lower house, when, in actual sense, the two chambers of the National Assembly have equal powers. Yes, neither the Senate nor the House of Representatives could, for example, pass a law in isolation. The two houses must agree, individually or jointly, for such a law to be passed. And in terms of disciplinary functions, a president can only be impeached if the Senate and the House of Representatives vote for it. If one of the houses votes no and the other says yes, such impeachment move fails. With this known fact, why then would one house be the upper chamber while the other is the lower arm?

Bus stop blast kills 40 people in North East – source

A roadside bomb tore through a bus station near a busy junction in northeast Nigeria on Thursday, killing 40 people including five soldiers, witnesses and a security source on the scene said.
The security source and witness Abubakar Adamu, a mechanic who narrowly avoided being blown up himself, said the blast set several buses on fire at the Marabi-Mubi junction, in a part of the country plagued by violence linked to the Boko Haram Islamist insurgency.
“There were bodies everywhere on the ground,” Adamu said.
The location is about 30 km (20 miles) west of Mubi, a town near the Cameroon border seized last month by Boko Haram militants fighting to carve an Islamic state out of religiously-mixed Nigeria. It has since been recaptured.

Ebola outbreak

Ebola virus
A 15-minute blood and saliva test for Ebola is to be trialled in Guinea, it has been announced.
The solar-powered, portable laboratory should deliver results six times faster than tests currently used in West Africa.
The researchers involved say faster diagnosis would increase the chances of survival and reduce transmission of the virus.
The trial will take place at an Ebola treatment centre in Conakry, Guinea.
Ebola is currently diagnosed by hunting for the virus's genetic material in the blood of a patient.

APC slams IG for insulting legislature

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has condemned the Inspector-General of Police Suleiman Abba for daring to say he does not recognise Aminu Tambuwal as the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and for “weaving a web of lies” to cover up the real reasons the police invaded the National Assembly.
In a statement issued in Osogbo on Thursday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said by refusing to recognise a speaker, who was duly elected by 360 members of the House of Representatives, and a speaker who has neither been impeached by those who elected him nor removed by the court, the police boss has thumbed his nose at the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Fresh fears over Pele’s health

The Brazil football legend Pelé has been moved into a special care unit in hospital in São Paulo, according to reports.
The 74-year old who won three World Cups during his glittering playing career was admitted to the Albert Einstein hospital in São Paulo on Monday with a urinary infection. He had an operation at the same hospital on 12 November to remove kidney stones and was discharged three days later. On that occasion Pelé had been admitted with abdominal pains that forced him to cancel a book signing event in Santos, where he lives.
Tests showed that arguably the world’s greatest footballer was suffering from kidney and ureteral stones. “He is clinically stable and in recovery,” doctors said on his release from hospital on 15 November.

Expect lower crude price –Okonjo-Iweala

The Coordinating Minister for the Economy and Minister for Finance, Mrs. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has told Nigerians to put on their shock absorption regalia to contain worse crude oil pricing in the international market.
She announced this yesterday in Abuja at a seminar of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) after highlighting some factors that led to the present slump that have not actually abated. From her analysis, since the contributing factors to the price drop, which include more discovery of oil in some countries, over production of crude by member countries and less dependence on oil by the bigger economies still prevail, an opposite trend to the drop would hardly be expected soon.
But she, however, gave Nigerians reasons not to panic about the situation as she assured that every economic palliative measure so far taken and the ones anticipated are targeted at ensuring that the shock on the common man is assuaged.

Jerusalem synagogue: Palestinians kill Israeli worshippers

Bloodied prayer book

The BBC's Yolande Knell says there were chaotic scenes in the aftermath of the attack
Four Israelis have been killed and eight injured as two men armed with a pistol and meat cleavers attacked a West Jerusalem synagogue.
The attackers - Palestinians from East Jerusalem - were shot dead.
Israel's PM vowed a "heavy" response and has already ordered the destruction of the homes of the attackers.
It is the deadliest attack in six years in Jerusalem, which has seen weeks of unrest, partly fuelled by tension over a disputed holy site.
Three of the victims were dual Israeli-US nationals, the US state department has confirmed, while the fourth was a dual Israeli-UK citizen. The funerals of all four men have been held in Jerusalem, with thousands in attendance.
Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu blamed the attack on "incitement" by the militant group Hamas and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

EKSU students threaten war over ASUU strike, fee hike

As the strike paralysed academic activities of the school, aggrieved students of the university quietly began beating their own war drum over the increment in tuition fees, coupled with the unwillingness of the management to conduct the students’ union election.

The link between low trade and high poverty (1)

Nigeria is not just a place to set up a business. The country is a big and growing market. Investing in Nigeria is tantamount to connecting to a big market
The relationship between trade and poverty is inverted. Countries with higher proportions of global trade tend to have less of poverty. Conversely, countries which contribute the least to global trade have higher poverty rates. This shows the importance of good trade policies in reducing poverty rates and increasing prosperity. Also, this shows why there is intense competition for export markets even by countries that already control significant share of global trade. Little wonder trade facilitation has become an economic policy of great importance.

When will Nigerian youths lead?

For months, I tried to avoid commenting on Gen. Muhammadu Buhari’s fourth attempt at becoming president of Nigerian under a democratic rule, but the more I dodged it, the more I became burdened and restless, until it dawned on me that conscience is an open wound; only the truth can heal it, apology to Uthman Dan Fodio.
Truth, no matter how harsh or bitter it sounds, must be told because we cannot escape the responsibility of tomorrow by dodging it today. After listening to Gen. Buhari’s presidential declaration speech with keen interest and rapt attention, I lost my peace, not because of his ethnic affiliation and religious background, but for the important fact that I am a Nigerian youth who, for decades now, has been buying the dummy being dished out by Nigerian leaders that we are the leaders of tomorrow.

The Nerazzurri sacked Walter Mazzarri on Friday after a poor start to the season and have brought the former Manchester City boss in to replace him.

‘White Widow’ terrorist reportedly shot dead in Ukraine

“White Widow” Samantha Lewthwaite, one of the world’s most-wanted terrorists, has reportedly been shot dead in the Ukraine by a volunteer Russian sniper.
The 30-year-old mother of four, wanted by Interpol and several countries including Britain and Kenya, was assassinated two weeks ago in the Ukraine, the Russian news agency Regnum reported Wednesday, according to Britain’s Daily Mirror. The report of her death has not been verified.
She was believed to have been fighting alongside Islamic State terrorists.
Lewthwaite is the widow of Jermain Lindsay, one of the suicide bombers in Britain’s worst-ever terror attack in 2005. She disappeared a few months after the subway bombings and is believed to have participated in terrorist plots in Kenya, trained jihadists in Somalia and aided the al-Shabab terrorist network.
She married a second time, to a British-born Muslim with extremist views who was reported killed in a shoot-out in Somalia between rival factions of al-Shabab in 2013.
Around the time of his death, she is believed to have masterminded the September 2013 slaughter at the Westgate Mall in Nairobi, where terrorists armed with assault rifles and grenades systematically made their way through the upscale shopping center, killing at least 67 people. Witnesses said a white woman was among the attackers.
She escaped Kenya with a fake passport claiming she was from South Africa. She has eluded authorities ever since.

IMF says to consider debt relief for Ebola-hit countries

The International Monetary Fund will discuss debt relief for Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone at the Group of 20 leaders meeting in Australia later this week as it considers further support for the countries most affected by the Ebola outbreak, an IMF spokesman said on Thursday.
The United States, the IMF’s biggest donor, first proposed the idea of writing off some $100 million in debt owed to the IMF by the three countries to support their economies and free up more money for government spending.
IMF spokesman Bill Murray declined to comment on a specific figure for the debt relief, but said IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde will discuss this issue with donors at the G20 meetings in Brisbane, Australia.

The disabled children locked up in cages

Disabled people in Greece are often stigmatised and can struggle to get the support they need. Some disabled children who live in a state-run home are locked up in cages - staff say they want to improve conditions but money is short.
Nine-year-old Jenny stands and rocks backwards and forwards, staring through the bars of a wooden cage.
When the door is unlocked she jumps down on to the stone floor and wraps her arms tightly around the nurse. But a few minutes later she allows herself to be locked back in again without a fuss.
She is used to her cage. It's been her home since she was two years old.
Jenny, who has been diagnosed with autism, lives in a state-run institution for disabled children in Lechaina, a small town in the south of Greece, along with more than 60 others, many of whom are locked in cells or cages.
